Pebble Beach ~ Dorothy C. Murphy, a native of Newark, New Jersey, passed away at Community Hospital with her family at her side. A graduate of Hillside High School in Hillside, New Jersey, she has lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 1956. Prior to her marriage, Dorothy worked in the insurance industry. She retired after a twenty-year career as a job counselor with the Employment Development Department in Monterey where she helped many young people obtain their first job.
Dorothy married Edward Joseph Murphy in March 1943 and their first assignment as an Army family was at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. Their career took them to Yokohama, Japan, to Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York, and to Frankfurt, Germany, before bringing them to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. Dorothy was active in the Presidio Officers Wives Club, serving as President and she wrote a social column for the Monterey Peninsula Herald. A member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church since 1958, she was also a member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Alliance On Aging, the Monterey History and Art Association and the Retired Public Employees Association. She was also a skilled and avid Bridge player.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Susan Murphy of San Francisco, Michael (Gayle) Murphy of San Mateo, Dorothy (Ron) Henricksen of Aptos and Kate Murphy of Oakland; her sister, Ruth Smith of Fullerton; her grandchildren, Edward and Theodore Henricksen and Erin and Shannon Murphy and her great-grandson, Gavin Caron-Henricksen. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Edward Joseph Murphy, in 1966 and her brothers, Daniel and Ludevit Cerven.
Memorial Services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 22 at 2:00 PM. Private inurnment will take place at Golden Gate National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 800 Cass St., Monterey, 93940 or Alliance on Aging, 2200 Garden Rd., Monterey, 93940.
