Dottie was born to James and Louise Graves on October 18th, 1928, in Lexington, Kentucky. She was the youngest of 6 and the last sibling laid to rest. When her father passed away in 1932, the children were placed in an orphanage for a few years before reuniting with their mother. The family migrated to San Diego in 1946. After high school, Dottie moved to San Francisco where she later married.
In 1969 Dottie and her husband began as motel managers in Salinas. They went on to manage motels in Lake Berryessa, Carmel, and Monterey. The last before retirement was the Stagecoach Lodge in Monterey.
Dottie was a member of the Bahá’í Faith. She believed in the unity of mankind and service to humanity. She hosted Interfaith devotional meetings in her home. She leaves a legacy of service, love and kindness shared with all she met. She will be remembered for her beautiful spirit and her daily practice of the principles of her Faith.
Her volunteer work included being a docent at Tor House in Carmel and a summer spent on a Navajo Indian reservation at the age of 75. She also wrote a weekly column called “Serenity Corner” for the local newspaper at Lake Berryessa.
Dottie loved to travel. Her destinations included Bahá’í temples in Germany and Illinois. She traveled to the Bahá’í World Center in Haifa, Israel. She attended the Kentucky Derby (she loved horses) and the Bahá’í Peace conference in New York.
Dottie is survived by her two daughters: Dona (Krueger) Betzold and Syn’d (Hansen) Golden; three grandchildren: Richard, Shaun, and Kara Smith; five great-grandchildren: Aniya, Jayden, Ashton, Zara, and Olivia.
Dottie will be laid to rest at Cementerio El Encinal in Monterey on March 10, 2023.
