Cathy, “Kate” to her loving family, bravely battled cancer for over 14 years with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She passed away comfortably at home on June 9, with loving family members by her side.
Born in Sacramento, CA and raised on the family farm in Robbins, CA, Cathy began her first career as an instructor at Gateway Center before transferring to Sutter County School District. Whether giving daily lessons and helping her students learn life skills or sharing outings such as taking them to the Special Olympics at Squaw Valley, she made sure they had the best learning experience possible.
For the past 20 years, Cathy lived in Carmel-by-the Sea. Here she began a second career in hotel management and became a Manager for Inns by the Sea. She quickly mastered this new profession and began to provide over-the-top customer service to her guests, many who became fans and devoted friends. The Carriage House Inn was her pride and joy and she was dedicated to keep it the best of the best.
Cathy also gave freely of her time and labor to both the Carmel Innkeepers Association and the Chamber of Commerce. She served on the Board of Directors of the Innkeepers Association for many years and, as a volunteer, was there whenever needed for either group. She became the master of shuttle bus service for the AT&T, gleefully handing out candy to the grateful riders. She assisted with Taste of Carmel for many years and also numerous other tasks. She was recognized by the Innkeepers Association as “Innkeeper of the Year” and also by the Chamber as “Hospitality Professional of the Year”. She was also proud to be a 40 year member of P.E.O Chapter HA of Yuba City.
Locally her devotion to daily walks made her the person to ask about “what’s happening” in Carmel – even the Carmel PD would check with her for the inside scoop.
Cathy loved to travel with family and appreciated visits to many states in the U.S., and picked up passport stamps from Mexico, England and Scotland. 20 years ago Cathy took her first skydiving adventure and never stopped; she completed more than 50 jumps.
Cathy was preceded in death by her loving father, David S. Lewis. She is survived by her best friend and mother, Beverly Lewis; Christy Lewis , her daughter - the love of her life; Anthony Lewis, her grandson - the light of her life; “twin” brother Dave, sister-in-law and fellow world traveler, Sandie; her precious younger brothers Bob and Tim, sister-in-law Audrey and much loved niece, nephews, grandnephews and Uncle Bob.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Jerome Rubin and staff, CHOMP staff - especially Molly, the Carmel Fire Department, Hospice of the Central Coast, caregiver Aruna, and her “husband”, John.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Central Coast, 2 Upper Ragsdale, Professional Center Suite D210, Monterey, CA 93940 or to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
