Pacific Grove
Anita Ann Harriger, 74 years, a longtime resident of Pacific Grove was born on October 3, 1943 and went home to be with the Lord on October 30, 2017, after a courageous six year battle with cancer. Anita was a strong Christian with an abiding faith.
Anita was born in Eureka, California. As a young child her family moved to Fresno, California. Anita graduated from Fresno High and attended Fresno City College, then Fresno State. Anita worked for Pacific Grove Adult School for 20 years as Adult School Secretary. She and Ed came to the Monterey Peninsula in 1968 to Fort Ord. After separation from the Army in 1970 they resided briefly in Monterey, before moving to Pacific Grove where they would live together for the next 46 years.
She met her future husband Edward Harriger on a Baptist Church hay ride in the summer of 1965. They were married on October 28, 1967. The had a son, Scott Wayne Harriger. She was preceded in death by her parents Ethridge Virgil Strickland and Grace Margaret Woods-Strickland of Fresno, California, and her brother Kenneth Lyle Strickland of Victorville, California
Anita enjoyed her life with Ed. She was a 30-year member of First Baptist Church of Monterey. She was active in First Baptist Church of Monterey having served as Sunday school teacher, Deaconess and was active in Ruth Circle, a group working to support missionaries and was back-up Church Secretary.
She liked to travel far and wide. She and Ed explored across Canada, deep into Mexico, Tahiti, Hawaii and all around United States. They began with tent camping then later in their fifth wheel trailer. She enjoyed reading, cooking and above all quilting. She won several ribbons with her quilts. She belonged to the Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild and Candle Light Quilters. She was also a long-time member of the IOOF Rebekah’s, a member of California School Employees Association (Ret.) and Retired Public Employees Association of California.
One of her favorite childhood memories was of family reunions in Northern California where she and her cousin Francis Woods were prone to get into mischief when together. She also had fond memories of trips to the Monterey Peninsula and dinners at the old Lover’s Point Inn and trips up and down the coast to Big Sur.
Anita is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ed, and son, Scott Wayne Harriger, of Fresno, California, grandchildren Shaylin Harriger of Marina, Jacob Harriger of Nevada, Hannah, Sarah and Julia Harriger of Denver, Colorado and their mother (daughter in law) Rosalie Olson, Aunt Barbara Woods-Stephens, Uncle Ronald Stephens of Eureka, California, Cousin Deborah (Curtis) Takemoto of Clovis, California, Francis Woods of Salem, Oregon, Roger Woods of Arcata, California and other Aunts, Uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family expresses appreciation for the care and support given Anita by Dr. Roger Shiffman, Dr. Bradley Tamler, Dr. John Hausdorff, the nursing staffs at Community Hospital Terrace West, Community Hospital Emergency and Community Hospital Home Hospice care.
