It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Kelly, of Oxnard, California who passed unexpectedly on September 20, 2024. Dan was born in Ohio but spent his early childhood in San Diego, California.
Primarily, he lived in Ventura County most of his lifetime and graduated from Channel Islands High School in 1978. At the age of 15, while we were residents of Pt. Mugu, Dan would work on the golf course, dive down into the water to retrieve golf balls, and get paid for it. After graduation, he had several jobs but found his true calling at Ventura County Animal Services, where he proudly dedicated 35 years to his love for animals, especially dogs.
Dan liked fishing at Rose Valley with his nephews when he was young, as well as ocean fishing. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed both watching and attending NASCAR races and Angels games. He liked the Lakers, Texans, and Chargers, but his true passion was the Ohio State Buckeyes—he was a college football encyclopedia! Dan also enjoyed playing adult softball and loved to BBQ. He had a strong interest in Native American culture.
He is preceded in eternal peace by his loving parents George and Janet Kelly.
Dan is survived by his sister Kathy (John) Cooper, brother William Rappe, his long time partner Alicia Recker, nephews Andrew Cooper and CJ Myers, and numerous extended family and friends.
We find comfort in imagining him on a big cloud with his kids, Maddie, Kayle, Romo, Sid, and Joey.
We kindly request that, in true Dan fashion, you attend in casual attire.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and loved ones consider making a donation to Ventura County Animal Services, a cause that was close to Dan’s heart. Contributions will help provide vital resources for animals in need, ensuring they receive the care and compassion that Dan championed throughout their life.
