Born on March 6, 1938, in Manhattan, New York, to Irish parents, hailing from County Kildare; Daniel Henderson of Kildare Town and Kathleen Carroll Henderson of Naas. He was raised in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx alongside his three younger brothers: Daniel, William, and Joseph. His upbringing was deeply rooted in family values and a profound appreciation for his Irish heritage.
Thomas dedicated his life to service as a proud member of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), where he served for 28 years, rising to the rank of Captain. A respected leader and active member of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA), he earned admiration for his unwavering commitment and exemplary leadership. His proudest career accomplishment was securing legislation that improved Line of Duty Police & Fire Widow's Benefits from half of final salary to full pay. As a retiree, he was a 9/11 responder, assisting in the rescue and recovery efforts at the site of the World Trade Center. Throughout this life, he kept the promise to Never Forget!
After retiring, Thomas relocated with his family to Orlando, Florida. In retirement, he embraced life fully; playing golf, enjoying days at Cocoa Beach, gardening, dabbling in real estate, stopping at any local garage sale he came across, watching the sunset over the lake in his backyard and cherishing time with loved ones, especially his three grandchildren. True to his natural leadership abilities, he became president of his community’s Homeowner’s Association and earned the affectionate title, "The Mayor of Eastwood" from his neighbors.
He is predeceased by his parents, Dan and Kitty Henderson; and his infant daughter, Jennifer Fay Henderson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Cannon Henderson; his son Jonathan Daniel Henderson; his two daughters, Caitlin Fay Henderson and Elizabeth Carroll McCaghren; his daughter-in-law Melanie Henderson; his brothers, Daniel, William and Joseph Henderson; and many adored nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was a devoted "Pop Pop" to his cherished grandsons Cary Conleth McCaghren, Cannon McMillan McCaghren, and Henderson Lee McCaghren. They were a source of endless pride and joy and a testament to the love he poured into his family.
Thomas was known for his sharp mind and quick wit. A gifted storyteller, he delighted those around him with captivating tales from both his career and personal adventures from the many chapters of his life. He never forgot a name, a date or a detail. His humor and warmth left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Thomas’s legacy is one of courage, wisdom, love, and laughter. May the memories shared with him bring comfort to those who mourn his passing and inspire them to live with passion and integrity.
