The son of Martin J. and LoNella Bangert (nee Rehwinkel), he was born on May 11, 1932 in Sheboygan, WI and was baptized soon after. He graduated from Concordia Seminary-St. Louis in 1957. He also received a MA in Theology after studies at Nashotah House in Delafield and San Anselmo in Rome. He received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from the English District of the LCMS. His ministry took him to St. Matthew and St. Luke Lutheran churches in Deerbrook and Elcho, Wisconsin, St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, and Peace Lutheran Church in New Berlin. He also served as Spiritual Counselor at both DePaul Rehabilitation Hospital and Charter Hospital, served on the State of Wisconsin Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse from 1989 to 1998, and was a Vice President of the English District of the LCMS for two terms.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Carol (nee Grohskopf) and is survived by a son David (Jean) and daughter Sarah (Michael) Nowicki. He enjoyed his grandsons Andrew (Melissa), Jason (Jessica), Timothy (Kim), and Jonathan (Erin) as well as his great-granddaughter Brooke. Martin is also mourned by his brother The Rev. Dr. Mark Bangert (Kristi) and nephews and nieces.
His special interests included music within the life of the church. He also enjoyed railroads and was involved with the Milwaukee Road Historical Association.

A memorial service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, New Berlin on January 15th at 3:00 PM with visitation prior, beginning at 1:00 PM.
Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or Lutheran Summer Music.
