Born on 21 June 1926 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the youngest of three children of Moses and Helen Hanna, immigrants from Syria, George received his early education there. With the advent of World War II, he served his country honorably, and upon discharge from the U.S. Army went on to receive degrees in education from Indiana State University at Terre Haute and Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana.
Following a teaching career that spanned some thirty years in the Indianapolis area, primarily in elementary schools, George eventually decided to seek sunnier skies and a milder climate, settling in central Florida in the mid-1990s. After living some twenty years in Longwood, Florida, he made his final home at Atria Park of Lake Forest at Sanford.
Preceded in death by his wife Norma Jane Leggett Hanna of Jasonville, Indiana, whom he wedded on 21 June 1953, George’s final resting place will be at Highland Memory Gardens in Apopka, Florida where his ashes will be interred in a niche next to hers.
A devoted husband, a caring father, and a loyal friend, George will be remembered for his gentle smile, a pleasant sense of humor, and his kindly nod. An avid reader, he evolved with the passing of time, ever mindful that life was a journey for knowledge and truth, filled with both joys and sorrows but at the same time presenting a test of moral strength and courage.
Final preparations for the interment of his ashes and a “celebration of life” in his memory will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to the Orlando Union Rescue Mission.
