ELIZABETH JANE “BETTY” KING, 85, of Oviedo, FL, passed away on August 1, 2019. Born on December 28,1933, in Warminster, PA, Betty was the fifth of six children born to Clarence and Mary Rich. All of Betty’s
siblings pre‐deceased her.Betty came to Florida in 1951, at the age of 17, just days after graduating from high school. The familysettled in Gabriella, Seminole County, between Deep Lake and Little Lake Virginia. The family openedand operated Rich’s Supermarket on Highway 50 in Union Park.
In 1954, Betty married Oviedo‐native Andrew Jackson “Jack” King. They made their home in Black
Hammock, where they raised four children and fostered many others from the orphanage at St. Luke’s
Lutheran Church in Slavia.
Betty was active in the church at St. Luke’s. All four of her children were baptized at St. Luke’s and
attended parochial school there. She was involved with teaching Sunday School, driving the school bus
to Geneva and to Altamonte Springs as well as participating in sewing and 4‐H club at the school. She
also worked in the administration office at Florida Technological University, now known as the
University of Central Florida. Later, after moving to Homosassa following the death of her husband,
Betty served as the organist, choir director, and church secretary for Faith Lutheran Church in Lecanto.
She had a love for travel, made easy by Jack’s affiliation with Trans World Airlines. She and her family
traveled to many parts of the United States and the world. She was also a timeshare enthusiast and
especially enjoyed the time she spent at the Wyndham Resorts in Branson, Missouri and Daytona Beach.
Betty is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Joy Dishman; and sons Robert Jackson (Shari), Thomas
Andrew, and James Gary (Valerie); seven grandchildren, Andrew Dishman (Carrie), Felicia King‐Cobaugh
(Toby), Melissa King‐Williford (Gene), Jaime Peterson, Megan Williams (Eric), Chelsea Burkholder (Kevin
Bell) and Nicolas Burkholder; and 12 great grandchildren.
A visitation for Betty will be held on Thursday, August 8, from 4‐7 p.m. at Baldwin‐Fairchild Funeral
Home in Oviedo, with a service on Friday, August 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Salvia. A
reception for family and friends will be held immediately after the service at Habaneros Mexican
Restaurant, 829 Eyrie Dr. Oviedo. In lieu of flowers please consider making a directed gift to Lutheran
