Charles Harris “Chick” Winship, Jr. was born on March 31, 1929 in Charleroi, PA to Helen MacDonald Winship and Charles Harris Winship, Sr. He married the love of his life, Colleen Hysmith Winship, on Nov. 21, 1951 and was married for 65 years until her passing in 2016. Family was everything to Chick and he leaves behind his son, Charles Harris “Chick” Winship, III (Florence) and daughter, Barbra Winship Lloyd (Bruce) as well as 5 grandchildren, Ryan Winship, Lisa Winship Howard (Jason), Kendall Winship Potts (Will), Jeron Lloyd, and Samantha Winship, in addition to 6 nieces and 2 nephews.
In addition to family, Chick loved the United States Navy and retired honorably in 1972 after 20 years of service. Chick was a Bombardier/Navigator flying in carrier-based aircraft, including the Vigilante (a refurbished one is on display at the Orlando Sanford International Airport). Most B/Ns were officers but to fill the position when there were not enough officers, a select group of 123 Enlisted personnel were chosen for these positions. Chick flew during the Vietnam War and attended military celebrations and memorials including Veteran’s Day 2020. He was a past Secretary/Treasurer for the Fleet Reserve in Sanford, FL and attended reunions faithfully to connect with his Navy buddies. Chick was also a member of the Masonic Temple in Sanford and received his 50-year membership recognition in 2017.
After retiring from the Navy, Chick had a 2nd career with Piper Aircraft, in Vero Beach and Lakeland, FL where he was able to continue to be involved in aviation as the Director of Marketing and Sales. It wasn’t uncommon for him and Colleen to fly to the Bahamas for lunch or to Pennsylvania to visit family.
Chick and Colleen ultimately retired in Winter Springs, FL where they were active members of Tuscawilla Country Club, and enjoyed golfing and socializing with friends and family. They loved traveling to many places in the US and Europe, as well as a 50th Anniversary Alaskan cruise with their children and grandchildren. They were sweethearts since the 9th grade and it was a big loss to Chick when his beloved Colleen passed.
Chick was a loving, strong, smart, and successful father and grandpap, and his passing will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his family.
