Michael “Mike” Clinton Daly, age 68, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away at home on Thursday, May 18, 2023. A lifelong resident of Overland Park, he was born the youngest of three to parents, Clinton and Marjorie Daly, on August 19, 1954. It’s a miracle he survived into adulthood given his mother’s “alleged gambling issues”* and his father’s “sometimes questionable handyman skills”*.
Early in life, Mike developed a deep love for nature and the outdoors, formed from his involvement in the Boy Scouts, camping and countless hours of hunting and fishing with family and friends*. His mother was not as fond of Mike’s love of nature, especially when he brought it into the house dead* or alive*, or plastic*.
Mike met his wife, Mary Beth, walking to Broadmoor Junior High. The first date between Mike and “Kathy”* proved to be eventful for all parties, including their driver*. He would eventually marry the “older woman”* in 1975. Over the years, they had a range of hobbies from line dancing to Cowboy Action Shooting to scuba diving and travel all while wrangling an assortment of dogs and reptiles and oh yeah, raising two children, Carrie and Sean.
Mike spent most of his working years at the Overland Park Fire Department, where he ultimately reached the rank of Captain, and as the Customer Satisfaction Manager at Hodgdon Powder Company. While at Hodgdon, he loved it when he got calls from engineers*.
Mike was extremely supportive of his family, including his wife’s fear of heights*, his daughter’s lack of height*, and his son’s knot skills*. He shared his passion for fishing and shooting with his family while at the same time providing support for their endeavors such as annual dance recitals, collecting reptiles at the dump*, raising baby snakes*, automotive repair*. He greatly valued a good sense of humor, and people who could “keep up.” He had a fondness for the written word whether a creatively crafted email or a good pun.*
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth (Taylor) Daly; daughter, Carrie Daly; son, Sean Daly; brother, Robert Daly and family; sister, Cheryl Daly; beloved “pretty girl” Lola and her brother, Pete.
Services will be on Wednesday, May 31st at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park. The rosary will be said at 1pm with the funeral mass to follow at 2pm. Please join us for a send-off following the services, at the Tower Lounge at District Flats Apartments, 8789 Penrose in Lenexa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Great Plains SPCA, Veterans Community Project, or the Kansas Lottery in the form of Powerball or scratcher tickets*.
