Maureen Gernon Ong

Maureen Gernon Ong, age 85, passed away March 21, 2022 in her home and with her family by her side. Maureen was born in Sabetha, Kansas on February 20, 1937 to John L. Gernon and Kathleen (Foley) Gernon. The family lived in Hiawatha, Kansas and she attended Hiawatha High School then the University of Kansas. Later in life and after her children were grown she attended the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctorate Degree in 1990. Maureen practiced law in Johnson County, Kansas for several years.

Maureen was preceded in death by her father, John Lawrence Gernon and her mother, Kathleen Foley Gernon, and by her brothers, John F. Gernon and Justice Robert L. Gernon.

She is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Steve) Simon, Caroline Ong, Cynthia (Richard) Gier, and son, Michael (Elizabeth) Ong. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kathleen Gier, David Gier, Brian Gier, Gabriella Ong, Matthew Ong, Nicholas Simon, and Sophia Ong. Also many nieces and nephews, and friends in Kansas City and from her high school days at Hiawatha.

Visitation will be held 6 to 8pm, with rosary being said at 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204. Her Mass will be held 10am, Thursday, March 24th at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd, Leawood, KS 66206 with burial rights proceeding thereafter at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, Kansas.
