Mary Jane Ford, age 101, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024. Mary Jane was born in Callao, Missouri to Kathryn and Grant George. She was a part of The Greatest Generation where a lot of women went by two first names and a common motto was “use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”. She lived through the Great Depression and served her county during WWII. Mary Jane was a member of Marine Corps during WWII, stationed in the Washington, DC area. After the war, she returned to Kansas City and obtained a degree in Economics and worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of the American Legion Dwight Cowles Post 370. She married her husband, Jim, and they had one daughter. During her life she made the world a better and more beautiful place. She gave blood at the Community Blood Center for years. She made beautiful braided rugs that were sent as gifts all over the world. She enjoyed gardening and was a life-long animal lover. She had many shelter/rescue dogs and cats over the years and occasionally helped foster some too. She enjoyed traveling and was the chief navigator on summer family vacations. She loved visiting with relatives in Missouri, Iowa and California. She also enjoyed “neighboring” talking over the fence or in the kitchen. Many happy evenings were spent playing cards or just sitting on the couch talking and catching up.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn and Grant George; siblings, Margaret Ann (and Raleigh), Bob (and Sonya), Kit (and Harold) and Martha, and husband, James.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Ford; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside service for Mary Jane will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the American Legion or a No-Kill Shelter.
