George Edward Shore, 88, Overland Park, KS passed April 12, 2018. His visitation will be held at 9:00am followed with a Rosary at 9:30am and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am, Thursday, April 19th, 2018 at Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66213.
George was born on January 3, 1930 in Belleville, Illinois. He married Janet Ann McCasland on August 7th, 1954 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church of The Redemptorist Fathers.
George’s early infancy was spent in Belleville, Illinois. The family moved to Kansas City where George lived for most of his growing up years. George attended Westport High School and then moved with his family to California and attended Manual Arts High School. While living in California, he discovered “weightlifting”. Later the family moved back to Kansas City and he graduated from Westport High School.
George graduated from Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas in 1954 where he met many of his lifelong friends. He was an All-Conference guard in football, made the Dean’s Honor Roll and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was active in intramurals and was the 1954 Co-Homecoming King. In 1996 he was inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame and served on the Board of Trustees for many years.
Shortly after George and Janet’s marriage, he entered the health club business which was his lifelong career. He eventually owned or partly owned fitness facilities in the Kansas City area, Denver, St. Louis, Wichita, Omaha, Lincoln, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Atlanta, and Huntsville as well as on the east coast of Florida.
George managed a successful family life, blending being a good husband to Jan and a good father to Sandy, Kay, Nancy, Larry and Trish. He was known for his positivity, hard work and zest for life which he passed on down to his children. His most proud accomplishment was his family life.
George loved cards and board games; deep-sea fishing, snow skiing, water skiing, tennis and golf; cooking and entertaining; fishing on the Sac River; hunting in Missouri; attending Chiefs and Royals games; spending time with family and friends at the Lake of the Ozarks; watching KU basketball, hunting in British Columbia, the Yukon and South Africa.
He and Jan enjoyed worldwide travel together. One of their most memorial trips was to the Republic of Ireland for their 50th Wedding Anniversary with his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie Jeanne and Jim McCasland. He was able to visit Jan’s cousins and their families.
George was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Harold Shore; his brothers Houston and Ferdinand Shore; his parents-in-law Katherine and Lawrence McCasland; his brothers-in-law Bill McCasland, Jim McCasland and Dennis P. Cleary; his sisters-in-law, Mary Virginia Cleary and Pat McCasland; and his son-in-law, Wallace Harvey.
George is survived by his wife Jan; daughter Sandy, son-in-law- Bill Durick; daughter Kay, son-in-law Terry O’Neill; daughter Nancy Harvey, fiancé Alexander Smith; son, Larry Shore; daughter Trish, son-in-law Dennis Riley and his sister-in-law Marie Jeanne McCasland of St. Petersburg, Florida; Grandson Stephen Durick; Granddaughter Katherine Durick; Grandson Tim O’Neill, his wife Sarah; Grandson Matthew O’Neill, his wife Erika; Grandson Colin O’Neill, his wife Rosie; Grandson Devin O’Neill who was born on George’s birthday January 3rd; Grandson Luke O’Neill; Grandson Watson Harvey; Granddaughter Kristin Riley; Great Grandchildren Jameson, Olivia, and McKenzie O’Neill; Emmie and Alina O’Neill; Cosette O’Neill; his Cleary nieces and nephews; his McCasland niece & nephew; his Shore nieces & nephew; and many close friends.
The family would like to thank the ICU medical team at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care for George and his family; the medical team of Quivira Internal Medicine for their care of George for over forty-years, the Church of the Ascension Catholic Parish, Jean Hinman Ministry of Care Director and Father Michael Guastello Associate Pastor.
