James Dirk Wright passed away on July 4, 2012 at University of Kansas Medical Center at the age of 67. Dirk was born June 11, 1945 in Des Moines, IA, the son of Mary Alyce and James Horton “Dutch” Wright. He attended high school at Pembroke Day and graduated from Grinnell College.
Following college Dirk served in the U.S. Army until 1969. Dirk was married to Debbie McGreevy on Oct. 28, 1978 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Overland Park, KS. Throughout his life Dirk worked in waste water treatment, lab analysis, weatherization and home restoration. He loved to volunteer for Christmas in October and any other projects requested by friends and family in need. Dirk, a long-time Prairie Village resident, loved his community. He was a neighborhood favorite and was commonly referred to as “the dog whisperer”. Dirk was happiest when he was outside enjoying nature.
Dirk was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Lester & Phyllis McGreevy and sister-in-law Pam Crosby. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, brothers and sisters-in-law Tom & Tami McGreevy, Suze & Gary Freeman, Laurie & Doug Potter, David McGreevy, Mark & Joy McGreevy, Brian & Sherryl McGreevy and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at McGilley & Hoge Chapel Saturday, July 7th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with a funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org) or the Kansas City Zoo (www.kansascityzoo.org/donate).
