Bob Schmidt, Shawnee Mission teacher of fifty years, passed away on May 12, 2016. Bob was born in 1942 in Goessel, Kansas and grew up in Newton, Kansas. For thirty-three years, he worked alongside his father in Schmidt & Sons Harvesting, driving combines throughout the Midwest. He earned his BS in Education from Emporia State University and began teaching in 1966. He retired in 2008 but continued substitute teaching until his death.
He will be remembered for his love of baseball, camping, fishing and the great outdoors.
He is survived by Ellen, his wife of twenty-nine years; one daughter, Amy Day, of Andover, Kansas; two sons, Robert Schmidt of Kansas City, Missouri and Patrick Schmidt of Washington, D.C.; three granddaughters, Miranda Flores, Katelyn Day and Allison Day and one great granddaughter, Aubree Flores.
Visitation will be 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Monday, May 16th at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel. His funeral services will be 10:00am, Tuesday, May 17th at the McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204 with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy facility.
