Predeceased by beloved wife, Diana. Survived by family (nieces and nephew Deborah, Peter, and Katy
Jaffey) and friends. Michael was born in South Africa and grew up in Zimbabwe and was educated at the
University of Cape Town, and at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar (Rhodesia and St. Edmund
Hall, 1949). Michael immigrated to Canada in 1952 where he enjoyed a varied career as an engineer
and economist. After retirement he remained active and engaged, for example, publishing a book to
persuade the public of the need to act on issues such as climate change. Thank you to Micheline
Gauthier for decades of friendship, care, and support, and thanks also to Mila Camarsi and her team,
and all the staff of The Rockcliffe Retirement Residence. A memorial gathering will be held post-Covid.
Donations in Michael’s memory can be made to The National Gallery of Canada.
