Il était l’époux de feu Jacqueline Hamel (née Lapointe) et fut précédé par son fils aîné Pierre (Sylvie Corbeil). Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Micheline (née DesRoches ; feu Robert Paris, c.r.), son fils Denis (Sarah Marchand), ses petits-enfants Marie-Claude (Éric Couture), François (Stéphanie Chauret), Myriam (Antony Michaud), Laurent (Fernanda Bravo) et Nicolas, ses arrière-petits-enfants Éloïse et Gabrielle Couture ainsi que Félix et Évan Hamel, sa belle-sœur Claudette DesRoches (Dr Augusto Sabogal) et son beau-frère Julien Gosselin (feu Yvette Lapointe), les enfants de sa seconde épouse Céline (Franc Roiron), Dominique, Hélène (Leonard Bergmame), Martin (John Clark) et Brigitte (François Giroux), ainsi que leurs enfants et leurs petits-enfants. Il laisse aussi de très nombreux cousins et cousines, neveux et nièces à travers le Canada. Enfin, il laisse plusieurs amis de longue date ainsi que d’autres, plus récents, de la résidence Maplewood, où il a passé les huit dernières années de sa vie.

Natif de Saint-Louis-de-Lotbinière, au Québec, il a entrepris une remarquable carrière de plus de 40 ans dans la fonction publique fédérale, dont près de 24 ans à titre de directeur général des élections du Canada. On lui doit plusieurs changements significatifs et avant-gardistes à la loi électorale, qui ont contribué à rendre le système électoral canadien plus inclusif, transparent et équitable, et à l’adapter aux changements technologiques.

Ses réalisations professionnelles et son engagement bénévole dans de multiples organismes administratifs, culturels et éducatifs lui ont valu de très nombreux honneurs et distinctions, dont celui d’officier de l’Ordre du Canada, de chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (France) et de commandeur de l’Ordre national Bernardo O’Higgins (Chili).

La famille recevra parents et amis une heure avant la cérémonie des funérailles, qui sera célébrée à l’église Sainte-Geneviève à Ottawa, le samedi 22 juin à 13 h. En lieu de fleurs, un don à la Fondation Monfort ou à la Fondation du cancer d’Ottawa, en sa mémoire, serait apprécié.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jean-Marc Hamel, O.C. in Ottawa, on May 24, 2024, in his 100th year.

He was the husband of the late Jacqueline Hamel (née Lapointe); he was also preceded by his eldest son Pierre (Sylvie Corbeil). He is survived by his wife Micheline (née DesRoches; late Robert Paris, Q.C.), son Denis (Sarah Marchand), grandchildren Marie-Claude (Éric Couture), François (Stéphanie Chauret), Myriam (Antony Michaud), Laurent (Fernanda Bravo) and Nicolas, his great-grandchildren Éloïse and Gabrielle Couture and Félix and Évan Hamel, his sister-in-law Claudette DesRoches (Dr. Augusto Sabogal) and his brother-in-law Julien Gosselin (the late Yvette Lapointe), the children of his second wife Céline (Franc Roiron), Dominique, Hélène (Leonard Bergmame), Martin (John Clark) and Brigitte (François Giroux) and their children and grandchildren. He also leaves many cousins, nephews and nieces across Canada. Finally, he leaves behind several long-time friends as well as more recent friends from the Maplewood Retirement Community where he spent the last eight years.

Born in Saint-Louis-de-Lotbinière, Quebec, he began a remarkable career of more than 40 years in the federal public service, including nearly 24 years as Chief Electoral Officer of Canada. He was responsible for several significant and forward-looking changes to the Elections Act that helped make Canada’s electoral system more inclusive, transparent and fair, and adapt it to the modern technologies.

His professional achievements and volunteer commitment to multiple administrative, cultural and educational organizations earned him many honours, including the rank of Officer of the Order of Canada, Knight of the Legion of Honour (France) and Commander of the National Order Bernardo O’Higgins (Chile).

The family will receive family and friends an hour before the funeral service, which will be held at Sainte-Geneviève Church in Ottawa on Saturday, June 22, at 1 p.m. In memory of Jean-Marc, a donation to the Monfort Foundation or the Ottawa Cancer Foundation would be appreciated.
