Born August 10, 1948 on the family farm, she left to study nursing at the Hotel Dieu nursing school in Cornwall, Ontario, where she graduated in 1968, just before giving birth to Catherine (Mike), whom she gave in adoption to Colin and May Goodhew.
Janet moved to Toronto after school, where she embarked on a long career in nursing, at various facilities, including St. Joseph’s Hospital and Scarborough General Hospital.
In 1970, she married Paul Howard, with whom she had four children: Kari (Eugene), Kristina, the late and sorely missed Kimberley, and Bradley.
In 1977 the family moved to Blackburn Hamlet, a suburb of Ottawa, where she happily participated in a wide variety of social clubs.
In 1982 the family moved to Sandy Hill, in Ottawa where Janet became involved in community work, including the St. Joseph’s Elementary school PTA, Action Sandy Hill and the community newspaper ‘Image.’
Her professional work over her years as a mother to young children included a period of working in a doctor’s office, and many years at the Montfort Hospital in various units. Eventually Janet decided to move into Palliative Care nursing.
When Janet moved to Chicago with Paul, Kimberley and Bradley in 1993, she joined the NorthShore Hospice in Evanston, where she worked until moving home to Canada.
The final years of her professional life were spent at the May Court Hospice.
Janet is survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins innumerable.
Janet’s work was important to her, but her friendships were first in her heart. Her connections to the women she met at every phase of life were cherished deeply. Whether by blood or affection, through work, the neighbourhood or organized activities, Janet was devoted to shared conversation and delighted in shared company.
She died peacefully in her sleep after a long, debilitating decline.
