Unexpectedly, at the age of 61, Cathy Moffett passed away on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. The day before was a beautiful sunny day that Cath spent doing many of her favourite things such as tending to her wee backyard garden, sipping on a Timmy’s Iced Capp, and listening to music on BTR blasttheradio.com
Tuesday evening Cath shared memories on Facebook, chatted with her family and friends, watched tv and went off to bed with a “G’Nite and I love you!”, just as she would always do. As hard as it is on all of us, we take comfort knowing that Cathy did not suffer and passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Born on December 20th, 1961, Cath was raised in Ottawa and grew up in Riverside Park where she made many lifelong friends. Cathy was the second of three girls born to the late Clifford (Cookie) Moffett & her beloved Mom, Shirley (McCooeye) Moffett. Left heartbroken are her big sister Debbie LeBlanc (Gilles) & lil sis Sue Moffett (Mike Schnupp). Cathy is survived and terribly missed by her two children, her pride and joy, Steph MacMillan (Cynthia Bechara) and Shane MacMillan (Kayla Geraldi). Cath was the very best Gammi to her three ‘lil angels’ Jaxson, Hailey and Cole MacMillan, and was predeceased by her precious grandson Angel #4 Memphis MacMillan. Cath was a beloved Auntie to Chris, Jenna and Krista, and leaves behind many favourite cousins and her Aunt Bev (Roy) and Uncle Eldon. In 2010, Cath met & fell head over heels in love with Terry Bartlette, who was there to love and help Cath out for many years until he himself required full time help which Cathy lovingly took on until her very last day.
In her mid twenties, Cathy was diagnosed with a very rare neurological condition called an AVM and after some radiation to her brain, she decided against a risky surgery, rolled the dice and chose to live her best life, one day at a time. She left her job at the Registrar’s Office at Algonquin College to do what she was meant to do, staying home and raising her precious kids.
Cath lost the use of her left side by the early 90’s, survived two brain hemorrhages and amazingly persevered and came out smiling, even if that smile was a bit lopsided at times.
Besides her family, Cath loved gardening, new and old friends, classic cars, road tripping, live music, dancing, hot summer days, spending time at the cottage, taking pics of everything, and reminiscing. Cath was a positive, kind and caring soul who radiated love. She was a second Mom to so many of the neighbourhood kids, and a very best friend to Donna Cooper-Hayes and Julie Brassard. Last but not least Cath leaves behind her two cats KiKi & Cookie.
To know Cath was to LOVE HER, and she definitely left her gift of love and laughter everywhere she went!
A verse from a song written about Cathy by one of her close friends at Brookfield High School “When she walks in to the room you have to pause, she’s the utmost in perfection at its best. She’s got everything that any other girl could ever want, and something else that makes her better than the rest.”
“She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings.” Ariana Dancu
“A heart is shown not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” The Wizard of Oz
A celebration in honour of Cath will be held on Saturday, November 18th, 2023 from 2pm to 6 pm upstairs at the Orleans Legion, Branch 632 located at 800 Taylor Creek Dr, Orléans, Ontario.
Next summer will mark our first annual Cathapalooza to honour Cath with a weekend of live music, dancing, friendship and camping in the Pontiac at HoneyB Haven, details to follow.
Cath would have wanted donations to Roger Neilson House, where they provide palliative care to children and were like family to wee Memphis. https://rogerneilsonhouse.ca
You’re in the arms of the angels Cathidge, may you find some comfort here.
