Embraced home into the love of her Creator on Friday, October 31st 2014 at the Oshawa Lakeridge Health Hospital in her 55th year. Joyce was the most beloved wife of 31 years to her husband Michael, a devoted mother to her daughter Mary and her son David, who passed in 1998 but remained constant in her heart, and beloved and admired mother-in-law to Johnny Soln. Raised within a loving and devoted family, Joyce is predeceased by her father Frank, and survived by her mother Carmel Ulrick, her sisters Ruth (Walter) Holtz, Margaret (Fred) Barrett, Nancy (Bill) Jamieson and brother Dan Ulrick. Nephews and nieces from both sides of her family will remember and cherish the memory of Aunt Joyce. As a teacher at Msgr. Paul Dwyer C.H.S. for 28 years, her students, both past and current, will carry with them the memory of her kindness, infinite patience, and ability to inspire.
Throughout her 15 years of living with malignant melanoma, Joyce remained positive and determined. She embraced life from all sides, whether it was performing on stage in community theatre, singing, hiking, canoeing, talking with friends or working in her cherished garden. She was a woman of great spiritual depth who believed deeply in living a life of gratitude. She belonged to many organizations over the years, including the Durham chapter Bereaved Families of Ontario, the Durham Writer’s Circle, various theatre groups including O.L.T. and W.C.T. and perhaps most importantly to her, “The Well” her “sisters” in a women’s spirituality group. The family wishes to thank the N.T.I.C.U. and M.S.I.C.U. at St. Michael’s Hospital, and the Critical Care and Palliative care units of Lakeridge Oshawa. It is impossible to express adequately the gratitude we have for the loving and compassionate care we received from the nursing staff in every walk of her final journey these past 2 weeks. We also want to thank her specialists: Dr. Jose Chang, Dr. Jandranka Jambrosic, Dr.Carmen Simone and Dr. Sunit Das who all cared for Joyce with such devotion. Finally, we wish to thank Fr. Kevin Belgrave, Fr. Yaw, Sue Valentine, Tomy Valookaran, Denise Fox and Joyce’s WELL sisters. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Wednesday, November 5th from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH (194 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa) on Thursday, November 6th at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Donations may be made in Joyce’s memory to Bereaved Families of Ontario or Hearth Place or the St. Gregory the Great St. Vincent de Paul Society. We request that those wishing to donate flowers refrain from including lilies due to a severe scent allergy in her family.
