Our beautiful, kind and strong-willed mother passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Tuesday, May 29th, 2012, after just celebrating her 81st birthday at home with family, friends and neighbours. Joyce loved her family, her home and her garden. She was proudly independent, living in her own home with the support of her son, Scott and her wonderful neighbours. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Ken. Loving mother of Scott and Cherie (Aubrey). Caring grandmother of Kyle, Dylan and Justin Basdeo. Survived by sisters Maxine Kastner and Shirley Witt, she will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. We wish to thank the staff of the Palliative Care unit at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, for their sensitive care of our mother in her final weeks. At her request, no funeral service will be held. Interment of cremated remains will be held at Williamsburg Cemetery, Kitchener at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeridge Health Oshawa – Cancer Centre. Arrangements entrusted to OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234).
Memories of Joyce:
She was a classy lady. She had a great sense of humour. She was determined. She was patient.
She won all the card games at the cottage. Finally someone else will have a chance to win at Shanghai. At the cottage, she loved to work on a puzzle, never giving up until it was completed. Word searches became her latest interest. And, she never tired of trying to beat the contestants on Jeopardy.
She maintained close friendships with her high school and work friends that spanned 60 years, travelling and keeping in touch through annual luncheons.
Joyce had many talents – sewing, knitting, typing, cooking, baking, gardening, refinishing furniture, reupholstering, decorating and listmaking. She would rival Martha Stewart, she was so organized. She could tell Martha a thing or two about household hints.
She kept in touch with all her nieces and nephews, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary. If you were going to do something, you better do it perfectly, was her attitude. Or tear it out and start over.
She took pride in her house and her yard. She enjoyed her neighbours and appreciated the help they gave her in recent years as she learned to live on her own. Flowers, birds, chipmunks, squirrels and dogs gave her joy.
Joyce also cared about her appearance – insisting on leaving hospital to get her hair cut and coloured. That, and a trip to Dairy Queen to enjoy a Peanut Buster Parfait were some of her latest activities.
She enjoyed her grandsons – spending time teaching them to play cards, to use a typewriter, and to colour in the lines when they were young. She enjoyed their successes at school and in sports. She appreciated their homemade Xmas gifts.
Too many memories to remember at once. Please write us with your memories.
Scott and Cherie
