It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Allan Furlong of Oshawa, Ontario. Allan was a loving husband and father, brother, grandfather and great friend to many people. He leaves behind his wife Mary, his children Katie and Michael (Meredith) and his 6 grandchildren; Abby, Luke, Danielle, Zack, Ainsley, Emmersyn and great-grand daughter Amelia.
He was reunited in passing with his brother Norman and survived by his brothers Wayne (Deirdre) and Gary (Suzanne) and sister Carol (Andre)
Allan attended the University of New Brunswick, receiving a bachelor of Arts degree. He was a natural people person with a drive to help others and make his community a better place. He was involved in various student affairs such as the Winter Carnival and year book committees.
Allan grew up in Rouyn- Noranda. He was a true Canadian, with a love of hockey from a very early age. This passion for the game continued into University. He played Varsity hockey for 3 years where he not only earned the nickname “Bullet Furlong” but also was inducted into the university's hockey hall of fame. Allan continued to play hockey, well into adulthood including 25 years of old timers' hockey.
His first experience in government affairs occurred when he worked for the Treasury Board of the Government of New Brunswick as a Budget and Management Analysis for 2 years. The job piqued his interest so much that he returned to University to attend Law School where he received a LLB degree. Allan met his wife Mary while attending UNB and they were happily married for 56 years at the time of his passing. Shortly after graduating Law school Allan and Mary left New Brunswick and moved to Oshawa, Ontario where Allan joined the law firm of Salmers and Furlong.
Even though Allan was a newcomer to the city of Oshawa, he continued to be very active in community affairs and politics. He was elected to the Durham Region Separate School Board for a two-year term. He also became very active in both the Provincial and Federal Liberal parties, including being elected MPP in 1987 to represent Oshawa/Whitby. He advocated for his constituents in his riding and in turn the GO train was extended to Whitby, then later Oshawa. Additionally, he served as President of the Liberal Party of Ontario for one term.
Allan was elected President of the Oshawa and District Association for Community living for several years. He was also appointed chairman of the Oshawa Harbour Commission. In addition, he served as president of the Oshawa Golf Club, where he was also an active member for 45 years.
He was appointed to the Board of Governors of the new University of Ontario Institute of Technology and served 6 years. With Allan's passion for education and helping people, it was a great honour for him to belong to the new university board. He was also privileged to serve on the Durham Region Police Services Board for 10 years.
Allan’s legacy of kindness, friendship, family and community involvement will live on through all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Parish 1100 Mary Street North, Oshawa on Friday March 7, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. Cremation to follow.
There will be a celebration of life for Allan, following the funeral at the Oshawa Golf Club from 12 noon to 2:30 pm.
