Walter R. Mahoney (95), passed peacefully in his own home on September 6, 2021, after a short illness. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years (Gloria). He is survived by his son Mark Mahoney and daughter-in-law Lisa Mahoney (Orlando, FL), grandson Matthew Mahoney (Daytona Beach), and grand-daughter Lindsey Mahoney (Pensacola).
Walter often stated that he was lucky to have a full and long life, and to see so many things. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born in Pittsfield, MA, he was the last surviving and youngest of 14 children. His parents, John and Helen Mahoney were Irish Immigrants that taught him his work ethics and strong morals. Walter often talked about what it was like to grow up during the depression of 1930’s and learned about persevering during difficult times.
Walter joined the United States Navy when he was 17 years old, and proudly served his country along with his older brothers Ed, Tom, Joe, Bill and Jim. Walter fought in WWII in the U.S Navy Amphibious Forces in the Pacific Theater and served as a crew member of LST 1065. He traveled the pacific and was in Japan just after Japan’s surrender. He continued to be a tough and proud “Navy Man” throughout his entire life.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Providence, RI, to a job at Hanley’s Brewery and was married to his sweetheart Gloria (Ferrante). He held various blue-collar jobs before he found his way into the plumbing trade. Walter was an avid “union man” and a member of Boston’s Local 12 Plumbers Union. He worked on many of the buildings that dot the Boston skyline, as well as paper plants in Maine and other plumbing jobs throughout the U.S and Puerto Rico. He took great pride in his work, whatever it was.
In the late 1970s he decided to retire and moved the family to the beach in Ormond By the Sea, FL. Walter really enjoyed the local area and weather. He loved working on his house and in his garden with his wife Gloria, as well as fishing, crabbing, and walking the beach. Walter was a lifelong Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He had many friends and was grateful for his long and healthy retirement.
There will be a Catholic Funeral Mass at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church at 11:00 am Friday, October 15, 2021, followed by an interment service with military honors at Volusia Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a favorite charity.
