Shirley Jeanette Griffith Croasmun went to be with the Lord on July 20, 2011 at the Port Orange Hospice Care Center, with her family at her side. A celebration of life of Shirley Croasmun, 85, Ormond Beach, will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 25, at Port Orange Church of the Nazarene, 840 Taylor Rd., Port Orange, with Pastor Mike Walzak, and Pastor David A. Croasmun II (grandson) officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at 10:30 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be at Volusia Memorial Park, 550 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach, immediately following the service. Shirley was born August 30, 1925, New Hartford, NY, the daughter of the late Robert Griffith (died Jan. 15, 1986) and Nellie Jennings Griffith (died Jan. 1, 1979). She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Dick, Ray, and Bill, and her beloved husband John Croasmun (died Feb. 28, 2007), her son Jack, her daughter Cheryl, and her granddaughter Brandy. She is survived by her sons, Mickey, David, and Danny; daughters, Karen, Peggy, Bonnie, Sue, and Jeannie; she is also survived by her sisters Eloise and Betty and her brothers Bob, Gordon, Jerry and Roger; along with 25 grandchildren; and 42 great grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren. Shirley and John met in Rome while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. They soon married and settled in Utica, NY, where she was a stay at home homemaker with 4 children. Later they moved to Daytona Beach, where she continued her many homemaker duties as 5 more children were born to the family. In 1955 they relocated to Charlotte, NC where their last child was born, and raised all 10 children there. They all attended The Plaza Church of the Nazarene where Shirley was a Sunday School Teacher. She later served as a volunteer in the office at Florence Crittenton Services in Charlotte, NC. Shirley and John semi-retired to their beach condo in Ormond Beach in 1974 and later retired in 1989. When her husband became ill in 1998, she was a faithful caregiver for John for 9 years. Shirley’s wish was to have colored balloons in lieu of flowers.
