Lula Mae was born to Benjamin and Mary Alice (Stokes) Bridgman on October 8, 1932, in Belden, Mississippi. She was the youngest of 10 children. Her parents were share-croppers and she often talked of picking cotton in the Mississippi Delta. She married in March of 1950 and soon left the Delta; living in Tennessee, New Mexico, Texas, California, Colorado and Florida. Anyone who met her would soon find out that she was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. She walked out her faith daily by reading her Bible and praying, attending Calvary Christian Center, tithing, and sharing the good news of the Gospel with those she met. She was always eager to help those in need: examples are the homeless in her community, missionaries, orphans and Tarahumara children in Mexico, nurses in need of caps during the pandemic, among others. She didn’t have a lot of finances, but she always found a way to help.
She loved her family unconditionally and every one of them thought they were her favorite. She loved to garden, travel, crochet, walk on the beach or in her neighborhood, and meet with her church’s widows group. Her homemade cinnamon rolls were always in demand!
She is preceded in death by her parents, and eight of her siblings.
She is survived by her sister Mary Eloise Smoak; her three children, Jerry (Martha) Freeman of Kingston Springs, TN, Janie (Nicky) Rider of Chihuahua, Mexico, and John (Kim) Freeman of Ormond Beach, FL; her five grandchildren Kim Bell, Michael Freeman, David Rider, Tiffany Siegle and Maelisa Rider, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; as well as close friends from her church.
