Lewis Joseph (Joe) Janes, 82 of Port Orange passed away peacefully on December 18, 2014 after a short struggle with cancer. He was born on November 12, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio. After high school, he served in the Navy for two years before attending The Ohio State University and graduated in 1959 from the College of Veterinary Medicine. He moved to this area in 1972 and owned the Holly Hill Animal Hospital until it was sold in 1999. He continued to work for other local veterinarians until his retirement in early 2014. From 1959 to 1999, he thoroughly enjoyed his annual deer/elk hunting trips in the Fall to the Rocky Mountains area and later to Pennsylvania. His hobbies included playing tennis and chess; he was actively involved in local shooting/gun groups and had an extensive bonsai tree collection. He is survived by his wife, Clara, his three children, Beth Robins (Donny), Lynne Smith (Rob) and Tom Janes (Brea); three step-children, Todd Tower (Elizabeth), Kirk Tower (Annette), and Thomas Scharlau (Renia); sister, Marie Oberholtzer (Richard), 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. There will be a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Volusia Memory Gardens, 548 North Nova Road, Ormond Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halifax Hospice or the Halifax Humane Society.
