Joseph Cairo passed away in Haven Hospice on February 24, 2022, at the age of 92. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Victoria A. Cairo (neé Dusanek), his brother Ralph Cairo, his daughters Annamarie Cairo-Tijerino and Yolanda Cairo Raftice, his sons-in-law Wilfredo Tijerino and Michael Cairo Raftice, as well as his grandsons Joseph and Jon Paul Tijerino, and his great granddaughters Harper Lynn and Aurora Quinn Tijerino. He is predeceased by his parents Rosina and Salvatore Cairo as well as his brother Frank Cairo. Joseph was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 12, 1929. Returned to his family home in Rende, Italy, where he lived until the age of 18. Once back in Chicago, he worked for the Continental Can Company for 32 years interrupted only by his service in the US Army during the Korean War. Upon his retirement from Continental Can Company, he and his family moved to Ormond by the Sea, Florida, in 1980 where he was a salesperson with Scotty’s Hardware. Later he and his wife moved to Gainesville, Florida, to be closer to their beloved grandsons, Joseph and Jon Paul. His kindness, creativity and love played a pivotal role in their lives. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have inherited his love of all animals.He also loved woodworking, building and repairing almost anything. He was an active member of Holy Faith Catholic Church in Gainesville, and enjoyed bowling with his league at Splitz. His family is grateful for the loving care Joe and Viki have received at the Windsor of Gainesville and the support he received from Haven Hospice in this last transition. A visitation and graveside service will be held at Volusia Memorial Park in Ormond Beach, Florida, on Monday, March 7, 2022, at 12 pm. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 9:00 am at Holy Faith Catholic Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in the name of Joseph Cairo to Haven Hospice or the Humane Society.
