Frank served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Army along with his brothers Stanley and Leonard. Following commando and other training in the U.S. he was deployed to Europe. In June 1944, as part of the D-Day invasion, Frank landed on Omaha Beach with the 110th Infantry Regiment. He pressed on through the hedge rows and battle grounds of the Normandy region and participated in the liberation of Paris. After racing toward Germany with his regiment, which was part of the 28th Keystone Division, he was captured fighting to turn back the German offensive at the Battle of the Bulge. Frank spent the final months of the war as a POW in a German work camp where he suffered from severe malnutrition and the impacts of frost bite (from the Battle of the Bulge). After liberation Frank was returned to the United Kingdom for convalescence and then to the U.S. where he was honorably discharged in October 1945. He hitch hiked from Camp Pickett, Virginia, to his parents' home in Burnham, Illinois, where he was reunited with his loving family. Frank has always insisted that he was the "lucky one" to return from the battlefields of Europe.
Frank married Elizabeth (Betty) Pauline Pavelka of February 14, 1953, in Illinois.
Following his service in the U.S. Army. Frank built a great family and a successful entrepreneurial career- owning and / or operating a grocery store, a trucking operation and two motels. Toward the end of this career, he worked for more than a decade at GE's aerospace operation and retired from GE in 1981. Not one to stay retired, Frank stayed active for another two decades building and renovating properties. More important than his career to Frank was his family. After the untimely passing of the love of his life, Betty, Frank raised two wonderful children on his own instilling strong values, loyalty to our great country and above all love for family!
