Russ was a man of integrity and commitment. He saw the best in every situation and his wit and optimistic personality turned acquaintances into friends with ease. He could make order out of confusion and leave everyone involved feeling good. He loved life and living on Cape Cod and he was always looking forward to his next challenge. He prided himself on balancing all his accounts, both personal and for his volunteer organizations, to the penny-always.
Russ attended Tuft’s University where he was a proud member of Phi Sigma Kappa. After graduation in 1961 with a degree in chemistry, he joined the U.S. Navy and spent the next two years on the USS Cambria. He remained in the Navy Reserve for the next eight years and attained the rank of Lt. Commander.
In 1963 he married Betsey Horton-his wife of 57 years. Family was always Russ’ first commitment. He was a kind, gentle, and an ever patient husband. He helped raise his two children through the challenges of childhood and the teen years and was always proud of them and their accomplishments.
Russ’ second commitment was to his career, largely spent with Johnson & Johnson in their textile division, Chicopee Manufacturing. He began his work as a chemist and later became Plant Manager at several different locations.
Russ’ third commitment was to his community. Over the years he served as President of the Kiwanis Club as well as the Chamber of Commerce in Gainesville, Ga. In Macon, Ga. he coached Little League baseball and made sure that each child played in every game. After retirement to Cape Cod, Russ joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Nauset 11-6, and taught navigation and mentored new members. He loved his boat the Pleiades. Russ was also proud of his role as treasurer of the Eastham Library Building Fund and he especially enjoyed driving the veterans to the VA Hospital in Providence, RI. He felt he was “giving back” to the generation that served our country so faithfully.
Russ will be deeply missed by his wife, Betsey and his children Deborah and her husband Edward Fortaw as well as his son Gregory and his wife Kristin. “Papa” will also be dearly missed by Andrew and Whitney Moehlich, his adored grandchildren.
Interment will be at the National Cemetery at Bourne, MA at a later time.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Russ at his home on the 9th of December, 2019 from 2- 4 pm with prayers offered promptly at 2:15 pm.
