WILCOX, Walter J. of Orleans died peacefully at home on Monday, September 28 at age 93. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Pendleton Wilcox in August 2003 and his son Alan P. Wilcox in June 1990. His is survived by his son James P. Wilcox of Boston and Orleans.
The son of Thomas and Louise Latimer Wilcox, Walter was born in New York City on April 15, 1922. Raised in Richmond Hill, NY, he received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army, received infantry base training, and spent two years in the South Pacific. He finished his army service as a military writer in General MacArthur’s Manila Headquarters.
After the war he received a master’s degree from Stanford University and went into textile sales and marketing in New York. At Cluett Peabody & Co. he headed sales promotion for the Sanforized Division and later served as V.P. of Marketing for the Koratron Company in San Francisco.
After spending 19 summer vacations on Cape Cod, he and his young family relocated to Orleans in 1970. Two years in security sales in Boston lead him into organizing and running college and university capital campaigns for almost 20 years.
Music was his avocation. He served as a church organist over a period of 65 years and last served The Federated Church of Orleans until 1992.
