He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 30, 1948 to the late Carlyle and Janet Newton.
He leaves behind his wife of 38 years Christine, and their three children, daughter Emily and husband Mark Thomson, daughter Kimberly Newton and partner Matt Daiute and son Jeremy Newton. He also leaves behind two brothers, Robert and Paul Newton, as well as his two nieces and a nephew.
Thomas was a graduate of UMASS Amherst and moved to Eastham in 1980. He served as Eastham town selectman for 10 years, worked for over a decade at the Eastham Superette, and for the past 15 years worked for the May Institute of Chatham. He received his Captain's license in 1990 and worked for many years on dive boats and tour boats, including the Rip Ryder in Chatham.
He enjoyed biking, kayaking, was an avid Boston sports fan, especially the Red Sox, but most of all enjoyed activities on the water, including diving and fishing.
