He was the loving father of Marysia Malcolm and Shelby S. Gasek, beloved Grandfather (or Bumpa Loud) to Emilia Malcolm, Zoe Malcolm, Josie Gasek, Teddy Gasek and Gus Gasek. He is also survived by his brothers Paul Gasek and Tom Gasek and nephew Tyler Gasek. Shelby had a wonderful sense of humor, a kind and caring heart, and he loved his family deeply.
He had recently moved from Miami, FL back to Cape Cod, MA, where he found peace living by the bay in Eastham.
Shelby was born in Utica, New York on February 15, 1953. He was the son of the late Rev. Dr. Stanley P. and Mary Ellen Gasek. He grew up in Utica with his two brothers, Paul and Tom, and attended Kent School in Connecticut. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Italian Studies from the University of Virginia and began his working life as a secretary at the Frick Collection in New York City. Shelby returned to Upstate New York, began work in the computer industry, and started a family. Eventually he moved to Florida, where he enjoyed the year-round warm weather, and worked as a construction manager. Finally, he moved back to Cape Cod where the Gasek family had spent summers since 1958. He joined the TruValue (Ace) hardware team and flourished, helping people from the Lower Cape community that he loved. Kind, loyal, and funny, he made many friends and acquaintances on the Cape.
Shelby was an avid fisherman, loved steamers and littlenecks on the half shell, walking the Brewster Flats, and watching the Red Sox. Cape Cod was his happy place.
A memorial service for Shelby will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 625 Main St., Chatham, on February 11, 2023 at 11 AM. All are welcome. Covid-permitting, a small reception will follow the service.
In the spring, there will be an interment in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica, NY where he’ll join his parents and grandparents.
