Roy was born February 13, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to the late LeRoy Elliott and Helen (Olsen) Elliott. His sister Joan (Emrich) passed away earlier this year. He graduated from Burnt Hills High School in 1952 and earned his degree in electrical engineering from Union College in 1956.
He married Barbara Ann Chmura on September 21, 1957 and together they built a life with their three sons Marc (Kit), Ross (Karen), and Lance (Sue) and later their four grandchildren Nora, Gillian, Maddy, and Eric. In addition to his sons and grandchildren Roy is survived by his sister Joan's children Bruce (Julie), Bonnie, and Brian (Rika). Their father Francis L. Emrich Jr passed away in 2016.
Roy was a member of Explorer Post 38 in Burnt Hills, New York and a starting forward on the Union College basketball team. He was employed as an engineer for Sperry Giro in Great Neck, New York where he worked on the guidance systems for the early ICBM missiles. He later moved upstate to Scotia, New York where he assumed the reins of the Ace Alarm Company from his father, growing that company into new security system technologies until his retirement in 1990.
He was a fisherman in waters fresh and salt. His boyhood summers on Peconic Bay instilled a connection to the water that would last his entire life. After their retirement he and Barbara traveled the West by car fishing the rivers that he'd read about all of his working life. He could build a house. He was a skilled cabinetmaker and woodworker. He built beautiful and useful furniture and gave it to the people he loved. When each of his children bought their first house, he and Barbara were first on the scene - a new kitchen here, a remodeled bathroom there, whatever needed doing. He was a lifelong and ardent Boston Celtics fan to his last days. He supported and endorsed the interests of his children and grandchildren, whatever they were, even if they were unfamiliar to him. He was a kind and gentle man.
A private memorial will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers or donations the family asks mourners to visit an act of kindness upon someone in need of an act of kindness.
