Robert Lee Mumford, 57, died in his home on Great Pond in Eastham on May 31, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous struggle with brain cancer. He leaves his beloved wife, Sarah Korjeff, son Parker, and daughter Rachel.
Born July 17, 1957, Bob was raised in Dover, MA where he enjoyed working on the family’s farm, careening around on his go-cart, climbing the barn roof with his dogs and goats, and being a "fox" for the Norfolk Hunt Club. He attended Charles River School and Milton Academy, graduated class of 1980 from Tufts University College of Engineering, and received his MBA from Boston University in 1983.
Bob settled in Eastham in 1984 and began restoring the historic Great Pond hunting camp. He worked at the Wequasset Inn before becoming Transportation Program Manager for the Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission (later the Cape Cod Commission) from 1985-2008.
Bob was committed to the town of Eastham, serving as chair of the finance committee (1988-1991), and as selectman (1991-1995 and again from 1997-1999), and on several other committees. He believed in the value of land conservation and was proud of his contribution toward the protection of Cottontail Acres and the conservation lands around Wiley Park.
In 1994, Bob married his wife Sarah and together they started a family. His career changed focus to managing rental properties in 2008 so that he could spend more time at home. He loved boating, biking, animals and all the nature surrounding him. He also loved teaching his kids to skate, ski, and waterski, and spent countless hours towing them and their friends around Great Pond.
He enjoyed time at the family’s beach shack on Coast Guard Beach, flyfishing trips to the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, and summer vacations at Squam Lake in New Hampshire, where he climbed Rattlesnake Mountain daily. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Rockywold Deephaven Camps from 2012-2015.
Bob was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Carey Mumford. He leaves his father, George S Mumford, of Westwood, his siblings Barbara (and Thomas) Kingery of Manchester, VT, Liz Forshay of Grantham, NH, and George S Mumford of Sherborn, MA, his in-laws, Michael and Anne Korjeff of Holden, MA, Greg (and Linda) Korjeff of San Carlos, CA, and Wendy (and Alan) Bellows of Boothbay, ME, his friend and mentor Edgar "Pete" Mumford of Sebastian, FL, and many other relatives and good friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 18th at 2 pm at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, MA, followed by a gathering for family and friends in Eastham.
Donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the Compact for Cape Cod Conservation Trusts (P.O. Box 443, Barnstable, MA 02630, www.thecompact.net) or to Dana Farber Cancer Institute (att. David Reardon research, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215).
