Richard J. Allain, 90, died Thursday, May 25, 2023 in Harwich after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Hueston) Allain, and the son of the late Philip Ernest Allain and Marie (Gaudet) Allain McGee.
Richard was born on August 27, 1932 in Leominster, Massachusetts. He proudly served in the US Army in Kaiserslautern, Germany as a Quartermaster. Upon returning to the US, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and built a career teaching in Lunenburg, MA while raising a family. He married Marjie, the love of his life, in 1959 and they lived together in Leominster and Brandon, Suffolk, UK before retiring to Wellfleet.
Richard is predeceased by his son Philip Allain. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Saunders and her husband William of East Greenwich, RI; and two beloved grand-daughters.
A fiercely independent traveler, his journeys took him across the USA, to England and most of Western Europe, and to his beloved Canada. He dedicated his adult life to his extended family, his coin collection, and helping anyone in the community who needed a hand up. He doggedly found ways to use math to beat the odds at the track and casino. After retirement, he spent many hours working with Wellfleet oystermen on new systems for clam and oyster aquaculture. An optimistic fisherman, he carried his fishing gear in his car just in case he passed what promised to be a good spot.
The family sends heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers of Regalcare at Harwich and Beacon Hospice.
Private interment will be at the Veterans’ Cemetery in Winchendon, MA. Donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Fund at wellfleetspat.org/donate or to the American Heart Association.
