Mary A Griffin

Mary Alice Griffin (Soden) (87) of Eastham MA; previously Morris Plains NJ, passed away peacefully at her home in N.Eastham on Saturday, Sept 10, 2022. Born on March 27, 1935 in Cavan, Ireland, Mary was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Donald Griffin; her beloved daughter, Laurene Susan Griffin and her parents Bartholomew Soden and Susan Soden (Connolly).

Mary is survived by two sons: Stephen Griffin and partner Kate Racette of Yarmouth MA, Mark & Darby Griffin of Wellfleet MA as well as her 8 beloved grandchildren: Cory Poole, Hannu Pechukas, Alexa, Brianna, Christian, Sydney, Cali Rose and Finnian Kai Griffin and one sister Nora Bellotti (Soden) of Long Island, New York. She also leaves behind a niece, nephew, several grand nieces/nephews and life-long friends, all of whom she dearly loved.

Born and raised in Ireland until the age of 14, Mary immigrated to America in 1947. She attended high school in NYC and then met her future husband while working at IBM. After spending many summers on Cape Cod, the family moved permanently to Cape Cod in 1973.

The Cape became her home where she raised her three children (and several dogs). Mary loved the ocean - she taught so many on how to make beach plum jam, impeccable knitting skills and the proper way to dig for quahogs. She welcomed you into her home and encouraged all to enjoy the beauty of the Cape. One of her nicknames was "Mary of the Dunes".

Those that knew Mary would describe her as one of the kindest person they knew. Mary was accepting of all and never judged. One of her biggest joys was spending time with her family and friends and in particular her grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on October 14, 2022 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA from 5pm to 7pm and October 15, 2022 at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, at 11 am.
