Orleans - Age 87
Marjorie Uhl passed away on Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at the McCarthy Care Center in East Sandwich. Marjorie was predeceased by Wyman Uhl, her husband of 63 years, who passed away in 2013.
Marjorie was born in Schenectady, New York, and grew up in Scotia, New York. She graduated from Scotia High School in 1945, and went on to study at the University of Michigan, where she earned a B.S. in chemistry in 1949. She worked at Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, beginning her chemistry career. After living briefly in Indiana and Illinois, she and her young family moved to Ashby, Massachusetts.
In Fitchburg, she was employed at the First Parish Unitarian Church, where she administered the youth programs. She worked there for five years.
Marjorie went on to work at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg, where she worked as a clinical chemist and assistant lab director while concurrently pursuing her master’s degree in clinical chemistry. Marjorie also owned her own stained glass studio in Littleton. She sold stained glass, created commissioned works of art, and taught stained glass classes.
In 1990, she moved to Orleans, Cape Cod to be near the ocean, which she loved. While living on the Cape, she had a fused glass studio, and also pursued photography as an active member of the local master’s group. She volunteered for many Orleans organizations including the Water Committee, Snow Library, and others.
She had an exceptional joie de vivre, loved traveling and exploring new places, sharing her art with others, and had an exceptionally strong will to live no matter her physical challenges.
Marjorie is survived by her three children: David Uhl of Antrim, New Hampshire, Suzanne Uhl-Melanson of Winslow, Maine, and Barbara Uhl of Orleans. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Heidi, Sarah, and Liza, who have wonderful memories of summer trips to visit their grandparents on the Cape, as well as five grandchildren. All those who knew the Uhl family are invited to a memorial and organic potluck on Saturday, August 23rd at 2 p.m. at 6 Windward Way in Orleans.
