EASTHAM - Lawrence Thomas O’Neill, 70, of Eastham, died peacefully at the Cape Cod Hospital on April 30th with his wife and several friends at his side following a courageous battle with emphysema and lung cancer.
Larry was born in Hartford, CT on December 13th, 1941 to Margaret (Sheehan) O’Neill and Thomas O’Neill. He was a graduate of Fairfield University in CT, did post-graduate work at St. Joseph’s College, and worked for more than 20 years as Sales Manager for BYK Chemie (USA). He was best known for his warm smile, quick wit and love of lap cats (Kazi and Lucky). He and Ruth enjoyed traveling, especially taking cruises together. He loved being with the whole family and enjoyed having everyone together for a nice dinner.
He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 42 years, their two children Sarah and Larry, daughter-in-law Kelly and two grandchildren Alyson and Sean. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Hallisey, brother-in-law Paul Hallisey, six nieces and nephews and their six children. He is predeceased by his sister Mary Catherine O’Neill.
He was a member of the St. Paul Church Knights of Columbus in CT before moving to Eastham in 2004, where he joined St Joan of Arc’s church and became a member of their chapter.
Larry served as a medic in the CT Air National Guard and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was also an avid chess player with the New Britain Chess Club where he won numerous championships.
Visiting hours will be from 5p - 7p on Friday, May 4th and 9:30am-10:30am on Saturday, May 5th at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11am on Saturday, May 5th at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Orleans. Burial will follow in Orleans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Knights of Columbus (c/o Bob Donahoe 160 Sea Gull Ln, Eastham), The Davenport Mugar Cancer Center at Cape Cod Hospital or the American Lung Association.
