Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory School and graduated from Notre Dame University in 1952, where he studied philosophy and history. He received a master’s degree in history in 1954 from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's in history and archival science from New York University in 1989.
He worked in the international division of Chemical Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) from 1955 until his retirement in 1990, specializing in Latin America and Europe. He also founded the bank's country risk analysis department. He and his wife, the late Lee (Ellerich) Tunney, raised a family in South Orange, New Jersey, before moving to Cape Cod in 1993.
A well-travelled and amiable raconteur, he was known for his love of food and culture, the occasional pig roast, and his knowledge of history, philosophy and religion.
He is survived by his daughter the Rev. Elisabeth Tunney of Patchogue, New York; his son John and daughter-in-law Donna Tunney of Brewster, Massachusetts; son David Tunney of Orleans, Massachusetts; sister Catherine Billings of Chevy Chase, Maryland; sister Hilda Dunn of Alexandria, Virginia; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 3, from 5pm-7 pm at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Wednesday, May 4th at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Orleans. Burial will follow in the Orleans Cemetery.
