EASTHAM – John V. Potter, 83, of Eastham, MA died on Tuesday, at the Terraces in Orleans on April 2, 2014. He was born in Hartford, CT to Vincent Hamilton Potter and Grace Isabelle (Kilby). He lived in Wethersfield, CT, New Wilmington, PA, Westerly, RI, Canterbury, CT, West Hartford, CT, Southington, CT and Eastham, MA. He graduated from Griswold High School in CT and Westminster College in PA and the University of CT. He was the author of a book entitled “Connecticut’s Canterbury Tales” which is listed in the Library of Congress.
He was an elementary principal in North Stonington and taught school in West Middlesex, PA, Wethersfield, CT, Preston, CT and Bloomfield, CT.
He served in the Army with the Third Infantry Division in Korea’s Chorwon River Valley.
He was a former member of the Chatham-Nauset Lions Club and a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, MA
He will be fondly remembered for his wonderful buttons made at the Wellfleet Flea Market and his famous neighborhood tomato stand.
He was the beloved husband of Carol Potter and is survived by his loving family Beth and Jamie Andrews of Farmington, CT, Alice and Chris Cartwright of Poland, Ohio, Kate and Frank Mitchell of Unionville, CT, Scott Potter of Rollinsville, CO, Chris Kasey and Enny Lee of Okpo, Geoje Island, South Korea; nine grandchildren, Taylor, Colette, and Dawson Andrews, Jason, Annie, and Noah Cartwright, and Aaron, Braedon, and Owen Mitchell. He is also survived by his former wife Shirley Watters of Farmington, CT; his sister and her husband Grace and Donald Cranick of Falls Church, VA and his brothers and their wives Rev. Robert and Chris Potter of Wheelock, VT and Bill and Cathy Potter of Wethersfield, CT and their families.

Visiting hours will be held from 9a-10:30a on Monday, April 7 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A funeral service will be held the same day beginning at 11am at Church of the Holy Spirit, Monument Rd., Orleans. Burial will follow at 1:45p in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
