John P. McCormick, “Jack” to his friends and family, died in his home at age 65 of a rare and aggressive cancer on February 28, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 38 years, Teresa “Teri” of Brewster, his daughter, Kaitlin (husband John) of Las Vegas and son, Michael of South Dennis.
Jack was born in Stoughton, MA, son of the late Edward J. McCormick, Jr. and Joan (Hughes) McCormick. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Edward J. McCormick, III. He grew up in Brockton and moved to Westwood in 1975. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School where he was active in several sports but particularly loved his football experience and the friendships made on and off the field.
Jack graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. While there, as throughout his entire life, he made lifelong friends. He particularly enjoyed his tenure as President of MNDC and was on a varsity team throughout his years at Penn playing Lightweight/Sprint Football.
Jack earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame Law School and spent his second year studying abroad at the Notre Dame London Law Center. While in London, he was selected for the Great Britain Korfball team that competed internationally. In his final year of law school, he was selected for the Notre Dame team that appeared on the Wheel of Fortune. Jack also met Teri at ND, and they returned to their beloved alma mater for their wedding at Sacred Heart Basilica.
Jack began his law career at LaTanzi, Spaulding, & Landreth, where he ultimately became a partner and later opened his own law practice in 1997. Teri joined him in 1998 to embark on their next big chapter: McCormick & McCormick. He devoted a significant amount of his practice to participating in CPCS’s Bar Advocate Program serving those in need. Jack was on the Board of Directors of Legal Services for Cape and the Islands for many years and served as the President of the Barnstable County Bar Association. He was elected to the Orleans School Committee and served until the family moved to Brewster in 2000.
His greatest joy in life was being a father to Kait and Mike. He loved coaching their rec teams and attending all of Kait’s vocal concerts and Mike’s Ethics Bowl Tournaments. He traveled far and wide to watch his children perform and compete from NRMS, NRHS, Carnegie Hall, Boston University, and Costa Mesa, CA. He loved traveling with family, from annual trips to Disney to trips to Europe. He loved playing games with family and friends, especially pinochle, and he had the privilege of ending his life as the family’s “Reigning Champ.”
Jack loved traveling and sports and visited all fifty states. He enjoyed visiting National Parks and Presidential Libraries and loved donning Parrothead garb for a good Jimmy Buffett concert. He was only five stadiums away from seeing a game in every major league baseball stadium in the US and Canada. He had his share of adventures from almost walking off a cliff in Scotland, driving the wrong way on a one-way street in Vienna, to nearly bumping into a startled Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Basilica on Easter Sunday.
Jack will be remembered as a fun-loving guy with many friends from every era of his life.
As one friend recently said, “Jack always had a smile on his face, a spirit for the next adventure, and a genuine love for life. The world is a little less bright after his passing.”
Visitation will be on Friday, March 7th at Nickerson Funeral home in Orleans from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
