Jane was born and raised in Chicago, attending Miss Faulkner’s School for Girls until her family moved to Elkhart, Indiana in 1943. She graduated from Elkhart High School in 1943. After graduating from Rockford College with a Political Science degree in 1948, she married Thomas Witter in Chicago in December 1948.
Jane was a housewife while the couple moved for Tom’s business career to Massachusetts, Indiana, Illinois, California and then Massachusetts again before Tom went to Princeton Seminary in 1962. While Tom was in seminary, Jane served as secretary to the Asst. Dean of Princeton University.
After serving churches in Connecticut and Ohio, Jane and Tom moved to the Community of Jesus in Orleans during the fall of 1970. She worked many jobs at the Community of Jesus, including managing the mailroom for nearly 10 years. As part of the monastery’s mission, she and Tom also served a parish in Rochester, NY and a mission in Bermuda during the 1990s and 2000s
Jane always loved handwork and knitting. She continued to make children’s things, afghans and even started her own socks just weeks ago. She loved embroidering church vestments, altar linens and tablecloths. She was always ready to work on puzzles, word games, or just chat.
In later years, she had severe leg issues that limited her ability to walk, but not her ability to drive around with her joy stick powered wheel chair. However, Jane remembered that she skied in 5 different states, went by horse into the Bitterroot mountains for two weeks and backpacked through the Sierra’s.
Jane is survived by her husband Thomas, daughter Susan, son Stephen, daughter -in-law Lori, grandson Br. Jacob Witter and grandson Paul Witter and his wife Kaity… and soon to be great-grandchild. She was also predeceased by her daughter Ann.
Jane said she wanted people to know that she felt she “led a fun and productive life” and that she “tried very hard to be a blessing to Jesus”.
There will be a graveside burial service at Orleans Cemetery Thursday March 4, 2021 at 11:00 AM or you can attend on-line at www.nickersonfunerals.com
