Harry L. Mirick, Jr. passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on June 8th at his home in Orleans, Massachusetts, shortly before his 90th birthday. The light of Harry’s life was his late wife, Jean, of 62 years. The center of Harry’s life was his strong unwavering love of God, love of the U.S.A. and love for family.
Harry graduated from Polytechnic Country Day School, Brooklyn, NY, earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic University in 1954, and later an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. After college, Harry served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps supporting the Korean Conflict from an active-duty assignment in the Pentagon, Arlington, VA. His business career included management positions in: IBM, Poughkeepsie, NY; VP for Operations at Hamilton Technology (Hamilton Watch Co), Lancaster, PA; and, Finance Manager for DEC Field Service Division, Maynard, MA. Building resources for organizations was a passion; Harry led local fund-raising efforts for the Boy Scouts of America, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the political campaign committee for the Massachusetts House of Representatives 4th District (Barnstable, MA) as Treasurer, among many others. Harry was a life member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Colonial Wars Society.
After retiring to the Cape, Harry became an active member of Brewster Baptist Church, enjoyed landscaping and gardening, traveling and hiking. Harry volunteered in the Town of Orleans for 11 years, including the Chair of the Finance Committee.
Harry is survived by his loving family, sister, Joan Aalde, sister-in-law, Nancy Thompson, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pamela Mirick, daughter Suzanne Schintzius, grandchildren Kristen and Alex Buckley, Kathryn and Kevin Knight, Carolyn and Jack Elliott, Meredith and Jack Potthast, Abigail and David Bernhardt, and eight great-grandchildren. Harry was predeceased by his grandson, John Schintzius.
