Nell was the eldest child of Charles and Ellen Johnsmeyer. Born with Down Syndrome, Nell surprised and delighted her family throughout her life with her wit, wisdom and accomplishments. She graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York and for 25 years thrived in her career as a grocery bagger at Stop & Shop. She found great fulfillment in her work, charming customers and coworkers alike.
When not at the store, Nell enjoyed sports and music. She was a dedicated NY Yankees fan and competed in an NFL pool during football season. A talented swimmer, Nell took pride in her collection of medals from successes at Special Olympics meets. Nell could often be heard singing, especially some of her favorite tunes by Cher or Frank Sinatra. But her truest pleasure came from time spent with friends and family. Never one to miss a birthday or anniversary, Nell was quick to celebrate those around her with kind words and hugs. She taught all who knew her to cherish the simple pleasures in life - going out to eat, taking vacations to Florida, or getting kisses from her dog, Boon.
Nell leaves behind her beloved parents, Charles and Ellen Johnsmeyer, sister Nora Johnsmeyer and brother Charlie Johnsmeyer. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends, all of whom she held dear.
All are invited to honor Nell’s extraordinary life on Friday, June 30 at 11am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Orleans. In lieu of flowers, Nell’s family asks that donations be made to South East Consortium for Special Needs, Mamaroneck, NY. or the Westchester Institute for Human Development, Valhalla, NY.
