Edward Stewart

Edward Lawrence Nelson Stewart, 66 years of Eastham, Cape Cod, Mass. died July 12, at the Mary McCarthy Hospice House in Sandwich after a determined and courageous battle with Prostrate cancer surrounded by his loving and much loved family. "Ed", "Uncle Ed", "Eddie" "Ed the Bread" will be remembered daily in our thoughts and prayers. Ed is survived by his most cherished friend and wife of 40 years, Susan Campbell Stewart, and their son Christopher Charles Stewart with whom they felt truly blessed

Ed was born in Quincy April 18, 1944 to parents Mary Kane of Boston and Walter Stewart of Jamaica Plain. After graduating from Quincy High School, he served as Crew Chief Helicopter mechanic rescuing the wounded and removing them from the line of fire in the Army from 1961to1963. James Trakaskas interviewed him while in Vietnam and wrote of this in his novel, The Vietnam Diary. After discharge, he attended East Coast Aero Technical School and graduated with an Aviation Mechanics license Ed and Sue married in 1970, and traveled half way across the country so Ed could accept a job offer Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, Mo. After the death of Sue's Mom, Peg Campbell, they decided to return to the place they loved , reconnect with family and build. their life in Eastham. Ed worked many years in construction, landscaping, shell fishing and home security. For the past 25 years, he owned the Pepperidge Farm Bread Distributorship from Orleans to Provincetown. For the past year, Ed was too ill to do the route and Chris stepped up and did a truly remarkable job for his Dad until Ed's death.

Ed was predeceased by his brother, James Stewart and in addition to Sue and Chris; is survived by his sister Rosemary and her husband George of Summerfield, Fl. and sister Kay Stewart Greeley and her husband Larry Greeley of Brewster, brothers in law Duncan of Mashpee and C. Bruce Campbell of Fort Collins Colorado and their wives. He is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and neighbors and will be greatly missed.

Ed's greatest joy was simply his son , Chris. He and Sue felt that their life was complete upon Chris’ arrival. Ed continually volunteered in Eastham Elementary School to assist teaching computers to the kids, helping out on special projects and field trips. He became a CCD leader at St. Joan of Arc for over 10 years and a Boy Scout Leader in the Eastham. During this time, another great joy was Ed and Chris working together on many different projects, leading and guiding Chris along to becoming an Eagle Scout

The family can never thank enough some truly extraordinary people who made this journey and gave us hope, determination and courage and, finally peace to fight this terrible disease until the end – several dearest friends who were always available to give rides back and forth to the many hospital appointments, offering hugs, love, tears, hope and patience. Our fine and wonderful oncologists at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Drs Rupal Bhatt and Dr. Ron Jamil - who simply never gave up . On Cape, Drs Kim MeadWalters , Dr. Swanson and Sullivan at the Mugar Cancer Center provided stellar support and care as well.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mary McCarthy Hospital and Palliatiave Care center in Sandwich; The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center , Oncology Department -Dr. Ron Jamil; or simply do something nice for someone out a long the way Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans on Saturday at 10:00 AM - Burial private - Please dress casually.
