ORLEANS—Edward S. Anderson, 88, of Orleans and formerly of Troy, NY died Wednesday July 19 at Maplewood of Brewster surrounded by family and caregivers. He was the loving husband of the late Virginia (Erniger) Anderson for 69 years and the son of the late Godfrey and Rena (Watson) Anderson. Born on December 3, 1928 Ed was raised in Troy and graduated from Troy High School. Ed held many interesting jobs after high school, including lifeguarding, repairing sewing machines and working in the plumbing field with his father. In 1960, Ed partnered with John McElligott to establish Anderson and McElligott Mechanical Contractors in Troy.
Ed was an avid golfer and was a member of the Van Schaick Country Club while living in Troy. He and his family loved vacationing on Cape Cod. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and still made time to help many friends and family with countless renovation projects. Ed and Virginia also spent time in Chazy Lake, NY where he was a member of the “Chazy Six”.
Ed and Virginia retired to Cape Cod in the 1980s where he continued working part-time for his son’s plumbing business and developed a passion for clamming and could make a great clam chowder.
Ed loved life to the fullest and had many friends and will be deeply missed by all, including his grandchildren who he loved very much, spending time taking them on roller coasters, swimming at the beach, boating, clamming and playing lots of pinochle card games and the board game Careers.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Virginia (Erniger) Anderson and his daughter Cheryl B. Overholt. He was also predeceased by his brothers George and Godfrey.
He is survived by his sisters Caroline Trzcinski of Brunswick, NY and Freda Allen of Clifton Park, NY, his son E. Steven Anderson and wife Nancy of Orleans, and his son-in-law Philip Overholt of Dumfries, VA. He was the loving grandfather of Mark Overholt and his wife Amy of Pulaski, VA, Ryan Overholt of Kingston, Kate O’Brien and her fiance Mike Jopson of Brewster and Alicia Hyde and her husband Jeff of Orleans. He was also Great-Grandpa to Meleah Overholt, Jackson, Lilyana and Maverick Overholt, Camden and Callie O’Brien and Noah and Maya Hyde. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ed’s family would like to thank the entire staff of Maplewood of Brewster for their wonderful care, kindness and companionship over the past year; especially his favorite ladies, Marsha, Mary and Cheryl. They would also like to thank Broad Reach Hospice for their kindness and support.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 24 from 4-6 p.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653. A burial service will be held in Troy, NY on Thursday, July 27, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
