Born in Stoneham, MA, on August 6, 1926, to Frederick James Taggart and Margaret Maunder Curtis Taggart, he was raised in Melrose, MA, graduating from Melrose High School in 1944. He went on to the Tilton School in Tilton, NH, where his education was interrupted by service in the US Army. He returned to graduate from Tilton in 1947. In 1951 he graduated from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and was captain of the ski team.
In 1955 he married Mary Elizabeth Eaby (Betty) of Hingham, MA. During Don’s employment at Cortland Grinding Wheels, Corp., the couple lived in Chicago, Houston, and New Jersey. In 1964, they permanently settled in East Orleans, where they raised their four sons.
After relocating to Cape Cod, Don was employed by Harwich Lumber Co. and The Cape Codder. Subsequently he designed many commercial and residential buildings, both privately and for building companies. While employed by Cape Built Homes, he designed the prominent Cummings Block in the center of Orleans, where The Land Ho and Cape Cod Photos are now located. He also designed for Gable Construction Co., and Eastward Homes.
Don pursued a passion for sports. He played tennis and skied the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine well into his 70’s.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind four sons: James Scott Taggart of White Plains, NY; Peter Scott Taggart, wife Missy, and daughters Haley and Alison, of Baltimore, MD; John Scott Taggart, wife Susan and sons McLean and Graham, of Forestdale, MA; and Andrew Scott Taggart, wife Lori, and sons Owen and Harrison, of Simpsonville, SC. He also leaves his sister, Alwyn Taggart Van Cor of Wakefield, MA, and five nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his brother Dermott Scott Taggart and sister Barbara Taggart Spain.
A visiting hour will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans; with a luncheon immediately after the services. Interment will be private at Brewster Cemetery, Lower Road, Brewster.
