Daniel Dougald MacLellan of Brewster, Mass., and Carlsbad, Calif., died December 23, 2022. He was born to the late John Allen and Rita (Hatch) MacLellan on May 13, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1966 and received a bachelor of arts degree from The University of Notre Dame in 1970, with a double major in political science and English. He then taught for one year at St. Joseph Academy in Laredo, Texas, a brief experience he remembered vividly for the rest of his life.
After working with his uncle at Don Shapiro Produce in Boston for about a year, he joined his father at Karklin-MacLellan-Harris Inc., which became the largest food brokerage in Ohio. They represented hundreds of top national brands, but he was particularly proud to carry on the special relationship his father had built with the Stouffer family in helping them develop and promote what started as a few frozen menu items, sold from their restaurants, into a full line of popular, high- quality products that introduced a premium segment to the existing frozen food market.
He was on the Board of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank for many years helping to promote their charity work with his connections to the food industry.
Dan greatly enjoyed his two main hobbies of music and golf. He had a natural affinity for them and was highly skilled in both. In recent years, one of his greatest pleasures was to play guitar or piano and sing with family, friends, and local musicians on Cape Cod and in California. He had been an active member of Chagrin Valley Country Club, May River Golf Club, and the Glen and Tantallon Golf Clubs in Scotland, and was a current member of Captains Golf Course in Brewster and La Costa Golf Club in Carlsbad. Wherever he travelled, he liked to play the local courses and had an encyclopedic memory of their layout and design.
Dan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Simone (Nguyen) MacLellan; his siblings, Genevieve, Mary C., John A., Alexander D., James J., and Rita C. MacLellan, and their families; many cousins; and his wife’s extended family.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, MA 02653, at 11 AM on December 30th.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (greaterclevelandfoodbank.org/donate), or to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (dana-farber.org; designated for Lung Cancer). For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
