Catherine Isabel Walten Binder of Orleans (resident of Maplewood at Brewster) passed away on October 5th, 2022 at the age of 90 years old. Born in Yonkers, New York and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Maximilian Graff Walten and Catherine Rauppius Walten.
Catherine was a 1954 graduate of Barnard College (BA in English Literature). While there, she met James (Jim) Binder at a Columbia/Barnard mixer and married soon thereafter — a marriage which lasted 60 years until his passing in 2014. Catherine was a devoted mother to her three sons: Ken, Ted (Anya), and Paul (Suzanne), whom she raised in Demarest, New Jersey; and the beloved grandmother to six grandchildren: Alex (Nisa), Kevin, Andrew, Catherine, Claire, and Cole.
In her spare time, Catherine was a talented painter of still life and landscapes — her chosen medium was oil on canvas. She was a student of languages, loved to sing in choir, visit museums, attend the ballet, host book club meetings, travel abroad, cheer on the New England Patriots, and socialize with friends in New Jersey and Cape Cod. Catherine was a member of the Orleans United Methodist Church, Newcomers Club, and Friday Night Club, as well as a frequent patron of the Academy Playhouse and the Cape Cod Symphony.
She will be forever missed. Graveside services and internment will be at Brookside Cemetery in Englewood, New Jersey at a later date.
